Read MoreThis project presented a unique opportunity for Bullrush Rally and Cameron Hill to collaborate with our team on a ground-breaking design concept tailored for Porsche racing. Their shared vision demanded a striking and innovative aesthetic that had never been witnessed in the motorsport domain. As such, the project emerged as an exciting Auto Artisan, World First endeavour.
Inspired by the artistic expression of pop art, paint splatters and abstract modern design, we aimed to develop a distinct livery that transcended conventional motorsport aesthetics. While acknowledging existing interpretations of abstract modern art designs, we identified an opportunity to leverage reflective film solutions for an innovative approach. This would serve as the baseline for the ongoing race livery of the vehicle.
These design choices resonated with the community – the wrap, combining modern abstract art styling with reflective details was award the Best Livery Award, presented by Porsche in partnership with Meguiar’s Australia for the Porsche PAYCE Carrera Cup Australia season 2019.
To enhance the visual impact of the established Pop Art design language, the team faced the challenge of incorporating a metallic reflection to elevate its dynamism. Initial tests with silver metallic film aimed to enhance brilliance but resulted in significant colour muting. Undeterred, exploration with white metallic film proved more successful, reflecting the desired metallic sheen while preserving vibrant colours’ intensity.
This project, like many Auto Artisan endeavours, required meticulous attention to detail for stakeholder satisfaction. Achieving this balance involved extensive collaboration and iterative design exploration. Internally, surpassing our expectations for originality and impact was crucial, with early iterations lacking the desired “wow” factor.
Our design philosophy emphasises strategic layering to enhance detail and depth. With over 60 layers spanning the entire car in this project, our multi-layered approach not only adds visual complexity but also allows for seamless adjustments throughout the design process.
We had to get this spot on, there were many people involved in the design process but it was all definitely worth it. The final design ended up looking extremely clean and still carried the right amount of pop art vibes.
Working within a tight time frame that is synonymous with a race car, our team worked tirelessly to complete the entire job in just one day.
However, as is often the case with race cars, removing the previous livery uncovered underlying surface damage accumulated during its time on the track. Typically, such damage would require repair before applying a new wrap – the condition of the surface significantly impacts the longevity of the applied surface film. Yet, for race cars constantly in motion, wrapping directly onto a damaged substrate results in a pristine-looking vehicle.
Leveraging the collective expertise of Auto Artisan, the car underwent disassembly, unwrapping, rewrapping, and reassembly within an impressive 7-hour timeframe.
A final quality assurance process ensured that the end product met our stringent standards despite the rapid turnaround, guaranteeing the livery’s durability for as long as necessary.
